Why did the bill suddenly increase?
In Riyadh, air conditioning alone consumes between 60% and 70% of the summer electricity bill. But this sudden surge usually has a specific, identifiable cause.
Examine these seven in order
1. Air conditioners — always start here
A dirty filter can increase energy consumption by up to 15%. An older air conditioner (over 10 years old) uses twice as much energy as a newer one for the same cooling. And setting the temperature to 18 degrees instead of 23 significantly raises the bill—each degree lower costs approximately 6% more.
2. The water heater — the silent killer
An electric water heater runs all day to keep the water hot even while you're asleep or away from home. Install a timer that turns it on only two hours before use—one of the cheapest and most effective solutions.
3. Air leakage
A poorly sealed door or window will cause your air conditioner to cool the street. Run your hand around the frames of windows and exterior doors—if you feel a draft, you need insulation strips. They are inexpensive and have an immediate effect.
4. Old lighting
A regular light bulb consumes up to eight times more energy than an LED bulb with the same brightness. If you have 30 old bulbs that run for 5 hours a day, switching to LEDs will save you a significant amount of money each month.
5. Devices in standby mode
Screens, receivers, and chargers consume energy even when switched off. It's not the biggest impact, but it accumulates.
6. Refrigerator and freezer
An old refrigerator or one with a door that doesn't close tightly will run continuously. Test: Place a piece of paper between the door and the frame and close it—if it pulls out easily, the gasket needs replacing.
7. Electrical leakage or faulty meter
If you've checked everything above and the bill is still illogical, there might be a ground leak in the network, an unauthorized connection, or a faulty meter. This requires testing with measuring equipment.
Test: Is the consumption real or a malfunction?
Turn off all appliances and branch circuit breakers, leaving only the main breaker on. Observe the meter dial or number. If it continues to spin while everything is off, you have a leak in the network —contact a technician immediately, as this is also a safety hazard.
Ranking solutions by return
| Procedure | Cost | Expected savings |
|---|---|---|
| Air conditioner filter cleaning | Free – 150 Riyals | Up to 15% of air conditioning consumption |
| Heater timer | 150-300 riyals | Tangible monthly |
| Raise the temperature by two degrees | Free | Approximately 12% |
| Window and door insulation | 200 – 600 riyals | Reduced air conditioning load |
| Converting lighting to LED | 650 riyals for 10 points | It is recovered within months |
| electrical leakage test | 300-400 riyals | Depending on the situation |
Start with the free one
Before you spend a single riyal: wash the filters, raise the air conditioner temperature by two degrees, and turn off the heater when not needed. These three alone may solve most of the problem—and if they don't, you now know the issue is deeper and deserves investigation.
